Frequently Asked Questions
Do RV renters bring needed revenue to the town’s businesses?
150 Seasonal RVers are less than 2% of our summer population. They hardly tip the balance in our local economy.
Is the general desire of Jamestown to maintain the campground?
Until taxpayers know the full details of the new plan for the RV campground and the cost of investment required, and are asked to approve the spending, no one can say.
Why was Friends of Fort Getty Park formed?
We formed to advocate for our primary waterfont town park, to promote civic engagement to discuss broadening the use of the park, and to raise funds to safeguard its natural environment.
Does each RV provide the equivalent of a median home property tax?
The town makes money from the RV’s only because we have never made necessary investments in the campground. Now that investments are being demanded, the RV revenue of $390,000 will be gobbled up.
But don’t we need the revenue?
Of course we need the revenue and we can work to replace it. There are multiple low-cost, low-capital ways to earn revenue that deserve to be explored.
What’s really important now??
We need to get an accurate, all-in cost estimate for Beta’s 62 RV plan; then let the public decide if keeping an RV camp or creating a publicly accessible park with other revenue sources should be the priority.
Is it true that RV’s will be moved off the north end of Fox Hill so that CISF can take over more land?
No. That is a rumor with absolutely no basis in fact. Any plan to move RV’s off the north end of the hill aims to create greater open space.
Doesn’t the RV park allow more non-Jamestowners to experience our island?
Tent camping and transient RV sites would allow a greater number of visitors such an opportunity. Seasonal RV sites with unlimited annual renewals favors only a small group.
Are you trying to remove the RV campground?
We are in favor of exploring all alternatives that enhance the Town’s use of the Park. We need an honest assessment of all costs, and we should not adopt a plan that leaves little room for daily visitors.
